Fraoch 2025
£80.00
Ink print with hand embroidery and metal beadwork on Irish linen | Naturally dyed threads (madder, ivy, blackberry, willow) | One-off work | 21cm × 14cm
Fraoch is the Irish word for heather, one of my favourite plants and a symbol of resilience across the landscapes of Scotland and Ireland. This piece began with a walk through a bog in Donegal, where I gathered a small sprig of heather, a plant that thrives in wild, windswept places and in tough ground.
The heather was first ink-printed onto Irish linen, and then stitched with naturally dyed silk, wool threads coloured by madder, ivy, blackberry and willow. A scattering of small metal beads adds texture, echoing the plant's strength.
This work is a reflection on the quiet endurance of heathe, how it grows in tough places, how it holds memory, and how its colour links the landscapes of Ireland and Scotland. Made slowly and entirely by hand, it is a unique, one-of-a-kind piece.
Artist's note:
Heather has long been woven into Celtic and Highland folklore, seen as a plant of resilience, protection and quiet good fortune. In some traditions, it marks the threshold of the Otherworld, a place where the presence of fairies and old stories meet in the landscape.
