Raithneach 2025

Ink print with hand embroidery on naturally dyed Irish linen (avocado skins) | One-off work | 28 cm × 28 cm
Raithneach is the Irish word for fern. This piece is inspired by the ferns that grow along hedgerows and country lanes on the Ards Peninsula, the kinds of plants you pass every day on walks down towards the sea, often without noticing, until you slow down and really look.
The fern form is ink-printed onto naturally dyed Irish linen made from avocado skins, creating a soft, warm ground. Hand embroidery is stitched over the print, following the rhythm and structure of the frond. The process is slow and meditative, echoing the repetition of walking the same paths and noticing small seasonal changes.
Ferns have an ancient presence in the landscape, resilient, delicate, and quietly enduring. They die back completely in winter and return each spring, unfurling slowly, a reminder of renewal and patience.
This is a unique work. There are no reproductions, no editions, only this one piece, made by hand.
