Uaimh Faoi Uisce 2025
£80.00
Hand-embroidery on Irish linen | One-off work | 21 cm × 17 cm
Uaimh Faoi Uisce is the Irish phrase for "Underwater Caves". This piece draws on a recent journey to Dunollie Castle in Oban on the west coast of Scotland, the ancestral home of the Clan MacDougall, my namesake, where I explored the family's historic textile collection, embroidery, scraps of fabric, pins, and threads kept by the women of the clan. That visit led me to question notions of belonging and identity: I sensed a connection, yet wondered how much of that feeling was rooted in my DNA or just a notion.
On the walk through the woodland (Dunollie Wood) beside the castle, the sea-carved caves beneath the cliff-edge caught my eye, and I have tried to capture my memory of them in this small embroidery.
Artist's note: May Uaimh Faoi Uisce invite you to reflect on where you seek refuge, and how that place was made.
